In recent years, a new concept has started to gain popularity in some highlevel political and scientific circles, as a solution to global food security and the environmental damage caused by industrial agriculture. The socalled sustainable intensification of agriculture has been adopted as an approach by national governments, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), agricultural research organisations, agribusinesses and highlevel funders.
